Parque del Litoral The city of Mayagüez was selected to be the host of the XXI Central American and Caribbean games by the Central American and Caribbean Sports Organization (ODECABE by its Spanish acronym) to be held in the summer of 2010. In order to prepare the city to host this prestigious event, a Master Plan for thoughtful redevelopment of the area most impacted by the games was undertaken. The Parque del Litoral was conceived to transcend the ephemeral nature of the event and become the principal legacy for the city, providing not just a world’ class Litoral park that will address the needs generated by hosting the XXI CAC Games, but also as a potent detonator that will further transform the neighboring spaces and the city’s relationship to the sea at a later date. The Parque del Litoral has an extension of 2.54 km. and covers an area of approximately 42 acres. The main structural and programmatic components are organized in seven main areas that respond to the scale and structure of the city’s urban blocks that front it. The park’s major components are: the Observation Tower, the Central American Plaza and Amphitheater, the Fisherman's Village and Grand Boardwalk, the Central Plaza, the Columbus Landing Plaza, the elongated lagoons and elevated covered boardwalks, and the New Stadium Plaza. The design of the project was developed over a period of one year and a half from January of 2006 to July of 2007. After a public bid process, the project commenced construction in December 2007 and is projected to conclude by December of 2009.
